Ashby School 14 – 19 Technology College

Ashby School became a specialist school in 1998, when it was awarded Technology College status. This was followed by a successful application to become a Language College in 2006.

Since then, thousands of pounds worth of additional funding has helped to create outstanding facilities in these two subject areas.

Staff in the two Faculties have worked closely with their feeder schools and local primary schools to share resources and run workshops and other activities.

Although specialist school funding is no longer available, staff and students continue to reap the benefits of the scheme.

Ashby School holds the International School Award for 2011 – 14.

This is the third consecutive time that the school has received the award, which is given to schools adding a global dimension to lessons across the curriculum.

Exam results at Ashby School have been consistently high and, in recent years, Ashby has been one of the highest performing state schools in Leicestershire.

In 2012, the number of students achieving five GCSE passes at grades A* to C including Maths and English rose six per cent to 69 per cent. In all, 92 per cent of GCSE students achieved five or more GCSE passes at grades A* to C (not including Maths and English) – up from 86 per cent in 2011.

At post-16, there was a 100 per cent pass rate with more than 17 per cent of passes at the top grades of A and A*.

Over the last three years, the school has introduced an international element to a range of subjects, including international poetry in English, international conflict in Art, world music in Music lessons, international trade in Business Studies and the study of diseases in Biology.

The school also has its own branch of the United Nations Association Youth.

The International School Award is given by the British Council.

Ashby School became an Academy on 1 October 2012.

This means that the school has greater freedom to make decisions about its curriculum, finances and other issues.

Academies are state-funded, independent schools, committed to providing a first class education.

Funding comes directly from central government, rather than through the local authority, giving the school autonomy over its finances.

Ashby School will not change its name or uniform, as a result of the change to Academy status.

A State boarding school is a rare thing but Ashby School provides boarders with a first class education. For over four centuries, boys have come to find education in Ashby, a small and traditional market town in the Heart of England and in the National Forest.

The Georgian boarding residence is nestled between the 15th Century Parish Church and the ruins of Ashby Castle. It is home to 75 boys from all over the world from ages 11 to 19 years.

Parents and boys are attracted here for a variety of reasons. Some are delighted with the unique setting, others seek to apply because they wish to experience the security and comfort of a family environment while receiving an excellent education. Whatever the reasons, the success of the boarding residence is certainly a significant factor. It has been classified as “Outstanding” and an “Excellent” boarding facility by Ofsted and the Commission for Social Care Inspection. Successful examination results, particularly amongst the boarders, in a wide variety of subjects are always a very significant factor when choosing to board at School House.

The most significant factor which makes School House so special and so very sought after is the boys themselves. They exemplify and determine the strengths and values of this ancient place. They are positive, they are hard working, they are cheerful and they want to be here. They can see the value of living in a community of boys at the heart of England.
