Welcome to St. John’s International School

St John’s International School is an independent day and boarding school in Devon for boys and girls aged 2 -18. The school is located on a hill overlooking the sea in the beautiful Regency town of Sidmouth and benefits from excellent facilities including beautiful historic buildings, extensive grounds and playing fields, a large heated swimming pool, indoor sports hall, adventure playground and tennis courts. With its warm, happy atmosphere, St John’s prides itself on providing a caring and safe environment for all its students. Most importantly, it is large enough to offer a broad study programme yet small enough to retain a special family feel that is valued by our students, parents and staff alike. Our school is part of the wider organisation of International Education Systems (IES) and combines traditional values with a contemporary, international approach to learning.

St John’s is a fully co-educational Boarding and Day independent school in Devon in the beautiful South West. It caters for boys and girls from the age of two to sixteen years of age. The Head is a member of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools and is supported by a committed and well-qualified staffThe long history of St John’s underpins its tradition as a centre of educational excellence. The governors and management are well in tune with the educational needs of the younger generation and ensure that there are excellent facilities to promote this learning, constantly striving to be at the cutting edge of learning in the 21st century.

St John’s has a long history of welcoming pupils from overseas. Indeed, the tradition goes back over 100 years when St John’s (formerly The Convent Of the Assumption) was the first and only Independent Preparatory School to be members of the British Council Education Counselling Service.       Our students have come from:       • Spain   • Germany   • Switzerland   • Holland   • Belgium   • France   • Russia   • Thailand   • Japan   • Taiwan   • Hong Kong   • Oman   • Saudi Arabia   • Brazil   • Mexico   • Argentina   • Venezuela   • Turkey   • Bermuda   • Dubai   • Bulgaria   • Guatemala   • Chile   • Ecuador   • South Africa   • Kazakhstan

All students must have a Guardian who have been appointed by their parent. English schools have three terms per year and each term has a half term holiday (normally one week). During the half term holidays (and the longer main school holidays if required) children will stay with their guardians if they are unable to travel Home. We also liaise with guardians of parents’ choice and enjoy a good relationship with other guardianship agencies.

Resident staff ensure that there is a lively and full activities programme after school and at weekends. Thorough integration with day children has always been a feature of the school and often boarding children are invited out for the weekend by their day friends. The Housemaster and the matrons encourage the boarding children to join local clubs and societies and present boarders are members of swimming, rugby and cricket clubs. There is also an excellent local ballet school, enjoyed by many of the children and the local riding school proves popular with a lot of our boarders.

Weekend activities include:

Ice Skating

Bowling

Biking

Hiking

Swimming

Crealy Adventure Park

Bristol Science Museum

Concerts

Theatre visits

Pottery

Trampolining

Aquarium visit

Zoo visits

Excellent facilities support an ambitious programme that includes field games as well as gymnastics, swimming, cross country running, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities. The boys play rugby, association football and hockey in the winter months, while the girls play netball and hockey. In the summer, the boys play cricket and the girls play rounders.
Gymnastics, swimming, tennis and health related fitness as well as associated skills involved in motor coordination, mobility and endurance are on the programme for all students. Many pupils enrich this already generous provision by participating in extra-curricular activities (at additional cost) such as golf, archery, tennis, and riding.
