Lancing College was founded in 1848 by the Revd Nathaniel Woodard, whose primary objective was charitable. As curate of Shoreham, Woodard saw the poverty and hardship of the agricultural and seafaring workforce and the ignorance and ungodliness of the middle classes who could not afford a public school education. He started 11 schools in his lifetime and now there are 43 in the corporation that bears his name. The first three, Lancing, Hurstpierpoint and Ardingly, all began life in the vicarage at Shoreham. They were intended to tackle social problems by providing “a good and complete education of sound principle and sound knowledge, firmly grounded in the Christian faith”.
The College is conveniently situated for overseas students. We welcome boys and girls of all nationalities and faiths, and pupils from all over the world have flourished at Lancing.
Entry for overseas students is at 13+ and 16+. The first step is to return the Registration Form together with a fee of £95. We also require a current reference or report from the candidate’s school and all candidates will be interviewed prior to a place being offered. Ideally candidates should visit Lancing to be academically assessed, or alternatively we can email test papers to an educational agency or to the pupil’s school. When the successful candidate is offered a place at Lancing, the payment of an Entrance Deposit of one term’s fees is required. This deposit is refunded when the pupil leaves the College.
We decide on entry according to academic ability. Those applying for places will be assessed in Mathematics and English (IELTS of 5.5+ would be accepted instead of an English test for Sixth Form candidates only). Although some classes in English as a Foreign Language are available, candidates need to have studied English at school and to have a good understanding of the language before they arrive at Lancing.
