Charterhouse, originally The Hospital of King James and Thomas Sutton in Charterhouse, or more simply House, is an English collegiate independent boarding school situated in Surrey. It is one of the leading school’s in the world.

Founded by Thomas Sutton in London in 1611, it is one of the original nine English .

13 – 18 year old boys boarding

16 – 18 year old girls and boys boarding and day

Most boys arrive at Charterhouse from preparatory schools at the age of thirteen, though some are admitted from other schools in Britain and overseas. They enter the Under School  and pass successively through Year 9 (Fourth Form), Year 10 (Remove) and Year 11 (Fifth Form). Girls join in the Sixth Form (Specialists). There are 800 pupils in the School, with 400 pupils in the Specialists of whom 110 are girls.

The curriculum follows the normal path to (I)GCSEs in Year 11 and Cambridge Pre-U or IB Diploma Programme in the Sixth Form, but every effort is made to teach according to pupils’ abilities, and to stretch the ablest well beyond the demands of the syllabus.

Today, pupils can take part in a range of sporting activities. The former England batsmen and captain Peter May was educated at Charterhouse.

The school first XI of the year 2006-7 reached the ISFA cup final, losing on penalties after a one-all draw with Hampton. One year later, the school first XI again qualified for the ISFA cup final against Millfield. Because of poor weather conditions, it was decided that the match would be played on one of Charterhouse’s pitches instead of the usual Walkers Stadium or the replacement at Woking F.C. stadium. The team won this match on penalties. In March 2011, the school reached yet another ISFA final, this time an historic fixture with Eton College after knocking out Repton and Millfield in the quarter and semi-final respectively. They ran out comfortable 2 – 0 winners on the day.ion. Boarding staff have good relationships with the boarders, and boarders can list a range of people who they can talk to if they are worried or have concerns.’

The 2011 Independent Schools Inspectorate Report noted that ‘The quality of pupils’ achievements is excellent. Pupils are extremely well educated. They attain extremely high standards in external examinations and make exceptional progress in their learning because of their positive attitudes to study, dedicated and often inspiring teaching, and an academically challenging curriculum that is adapted to suit all needs. The curriculum is enriched by an outstanding range of activities’

There are four old houses and seven new houses in White List (a directory of names) order. In Charterhouse vocabulary an old house is one which was founded in the early years of the school, as opposed to the new houses which were created later and are situated away from the main school. They are all distinguished by the colour of the pupils’ ties, umbrellas and football team’s stripes.

GCSE / IGCSE Results 2013

Charterhouse’s 2013 (I)GCSE results are very much in line with the previously excellent set of results that have been achieved in recent years. 42% of subjects taken were graded at A* and the figure for A* and A grades combined was 78%. 100% of candidates passed their examinations with a grade C or above.

All of our pupils take a minimum of nine (I)GCSEs: seven pupils this year gained straight A* grades and 37 achieved all A*s and As.
