Sixth form

Sixth Form education is radically different from what has preceded it. Not only do you study a much smaller range of subjects, ideally three or four, but you also have a rather different work pattern. At the same time there is an opportunity to play a role as one of the senior members of the school by holding responsibility and exercising leadership.

Success in the Sixth Form does depend on ability, but equally important is your attitude to work. Self-motivation, self discipline and the ability to work on your own are key factors. These are also essential skills for university and beyond, so the Sixth Form is about far more than just gaining A-levels.

Lower Sixth

Most of you will study four AS subjects during your first year in the Sixth Form. You will take three modules at the end of the year to get an AS award. You will also take the Diploma of Achievement, a general education and skills-based course, for which you will compile a dossier of material. As entry to higher education becomes ever more competitive, the Diploma is valuable proof that you have the necessary communication, presentation and organisation skills to cope with life at university or in employment.

You willl be encouraged to think about your future career and to explore opportunities in higher education. As well as getting advice from careers staff and accessing information in the careers department resource centre, we will help you to take part in university taster courses and gain relevant work experience.
