At the International Middle School, pupils aged 8—14

At the International Middle School, pupils aged 8—14 are provided with an intensive education in the English Language alongside core subjects such as Mathematics, Science, ICT, Art, Humanities, Drama, Music and Physical Education. Courses range in length from one term to one year and students will gain the necessary skills to be able to join a mainstream British Boarding School at the end of their course. For many, this will mean a move into Taunton School Preparatory, Taunton School International or Taunton School, but others will be fully supported to find a school to continue their education in Britain or elsewhere.

Located in The Grange, a beautiful, traditional Manor House close to Taunton School, pupils will be able to take advantage of the same mature ornamental gardens, native woodland and fine buildings that drew Sir Anthony Eden, British Prime Minister (1955-1957), to holiday there in his time away from office. The buildings have architectural features dating back to the 15th century but have been beautifully renovated to provide educational facilities and modern amenities of the highest standard.

As an integral part of Taunton School, the International Middle School pupils will be able to take advantage of the excellent facilities provided there and will have opportunities to experience at first hand the characteristics and features of life in a British Boarding School at the appropriate level for their age. This will enable them to make an informed choice about their onward education at the end of their year.

The English Language Curriculum draws from the best of the academic courses available and pupils will be prepared for JETSET examinations, as appropriate. Both General and Academic English are focus areas, equipping the pupils with the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills necessary to confidently tackle the next stage of their education.

Accompanying the English Curriculum is a  carefully constructed package of Study Skills appropriate to the age of the pupil, which will allow them to develop a range of strategies and thinking skills to tackle education in the British system.  Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is fully integrated into this course.

Other academic subjects develop not only subject knowledge but the necessary specific vocabulary and methods for studying in English. Subjects offered are:

  • Mathematics
  • Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Humanities (Geography, History, Religious Studies or Business Studies)
  • Art
  • ICT
  • Physical Education
  • Music and Drama
